How Many Fence Posts Do I Need?

96 ft straight run with one 4 ft gate

Spacing is an input, not a universal recommendation

This article uses spacing to count posts. It does not claim a single spacing is structurally correct. Fence height, material, panel width, soil, wind exposure, terrain, and local rules can all change the layout.

Use the spacing required by the product or by a qualified local source. Once that spacing is chosen, the post count is a rounding problem.

Straight runs and closed perimeters count differently

A straight run has two endpoints, so a 12-section straight fence has 13 posts before gates. A closed perimeter has corners and a loop, so the endpoint logic changes.

The calculator treats terminal posts, line posts, corner logic, and gate posts separately because a single total can hide layout mistakes.

Panels, pickets, rails, and chain link

Wood privacy panels are commonly counted by usable length divided by panel width. Picket fences use picket face width plus gap. Chain-link fences have line posts and terminal posts, with different fittings and fabric assumptions.

Do not let the post count imply that all other materials are finished. Posts are one part of the purchase list.

Practical and code limitations

Post depth, concrete, setbacks, fence height, easements, utilities, frost conditions, and permits are outside a simple material count. Call before digging where required and confirm local rules before installation.

If the fence is tall, exposed to strong wind, set in weak soil, or retaining load in any way, do not rely on a general estimating article as structural design.
