The calculation

Tiles = area with waste ÷ tile face area

(Measured area − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ (tile length × tile width)

  • Individual tiles are calculated and rounded up first.
  • The retail purchase quantity is then rounded up to full boxes, cases, or cartons.
  • Package coverage or tiles per package should come from the exact product label.
  • Pattern choice is recorded, while the editable waste field controls the actual allowance.

Common questions

Understand the result before purchasing

01How many tiles do I need?+

Find the net surface area, add an allowance for cuts and spare tile, divide by the face area of one tile, and round up to a whole tile. The calculator displays this individual tile count as the main result.

02What does boxes mean in a tile estimate?+

A box, case, or carton is a retail package containing several tiles or a stated square-foot or square-metre coverage. Many tile products are sold only in full packages, so the calculator shows both the individual tiles required and the full boxes or cases to buy.

03How many boxes or cases of tile do I need?+

Enter either the number of tiles in one box or the square-foot or square-metre coverage printed on the package. The calculator rounds the waste-adjusted tile requirement up to full retail packages.

04How much extra tile should I buy?+

The right allowance depends on the pattern, room shape, cuts, breakage, future repairs, and installer recommendation. Straight layouts often need less extra material than diagonal or herringbone layouts.

05Can I use this as a shower tile calculator?+

Yes. Measure each shower wall or enter a combined known area. Deduct large openings or niches only when appropriate, then use the actual tile and package information from the product.

06Can I calculate backsplash tile?+

Yes. Enter backsplash length and height as the two surface dimensions, or enter a known square-foot area. Include outlets and detailed cuts in the waste allowance unless you have a reliable deduction.

07Does the calculator include tile cost?+

Yes. Price can be entered per box or case, per tile, or per square foot or square metre. Cost is based on the rounded purchase quantity, not a fractional retail package.

08Can I share the tile estimate?+

Yes. Copy estimate link creates a URL containing the current project, tile size, waste, package, and price assumptions.
