Landscape Fabric Calculator

Estimate full fabric rolls, seam overlap, landscape staples, staple packs, and optional local cost.

Enter measurements below. Results update as you type, and optional prices can be added before sharing the estimate.

The calculation

Fabric rolls = strip length with waste ÷ roll length

Strips cover the project width using roll width − overlap; staple lines use perimeter + seams

  • Project dimensions produce a more reliable strip layout than area alone.
  • Overlap must be smaller than the fabric roll width.
  • Staple spacing should follow the fabric manufacturer and site conditions.
  • Both fabric and staple quantities round up to full retail packages.

Quick examples

30 × 12 ft bed with 3-ft fabricMultiple parallel strips
6-in seam overlapReduces effective strip coverage
3-ft staple spacingApplied to perimeter and seams
100 staples per packRounded to whole packs

Examples are planning checks. Product-label coverage and whole pack sizes control the final purchase quantity.

Common questions

Understand the result before purchasing

01How much landscape fabric do I need?+

Lay out strips using the roll width, subtract the selected seam overlap from each additional strip's effective coverage, add waste, and round the total strip length up to full rolls.

02How much should landscape fabric overlap?+

Overlap depends on the product, application, slope, and installation instructions. Enter the overlap recommended for the exact fabric instead of relying on one universal value.

03How many landscape staples do I need?+

The calculator estimates staples along the project perimeter and fabric seams using the selected spacing, then adds a small corner allowance and rounds to full packs.

04Does soil type change staple spacing?+

It can. Soft soil, slopes, wind exposure, loose edges, and product instructions may require closer spacing or a different staple length. Keep the spacing input editable.

05Can I use known-area mode?+

Yes, but known-area mode approximates the project as a square to estimate perimeter and strip layout. Length-and-width mode is more accurate.

06Can I include fabric and staple cost?+

Yes. Enter local prices per fabric roll and per staple pack to estimate the rounded purchase total.
